History of New Steamship Consultants

New Steamship Consultants was started in 1968. When we began, we were a small dealer of books about Ocean Liners. One of our first undertakings, was that we were the US distributor of a book called "The Queens", which was a story of the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and the then new QE2. We also were the distributor of a line of Ocean Liner Post Cards.

We added more Ocean Liner books from many different publishers to suit our customers needs. In the early 1970s, we started to sell Original Ocean Liner Memorabilia (deck plans, booklets, brochures, menus, passenger lists, programs, etc.) from the popular liners. As time progressed, the sales of and the demand for the Original Ocean Liner Memorabilia grew.

Sometime in early 1974, the sale of Original Memorabilia eclipsed the sales of the Ocean Liner books. It was becoming increasingly difficult to depend on numerous publishers to allow us to provide the level of customer satisfaction that we insist upon. In late 1975, we made the decision to phase out the books and concentrate strictly on the Original Memorabilia.

The demand for the Ocean Liner Memorabilia was growing very rapidly. We were constantly adding new clients to our mailing list, as we still do today. In 1979 we had customers in over 40 of the United States and several foreign countries. In 1980, we acquired "Steamships", a small dealer of Ocean Liner Memorabilia.

Business continued to grow and in 1985 we had clients in all 50 United States. The decade of the 80s saw a continuation of demand for Ocean Liner Memorabilia, and a growing shortage of quality Memorabilia for sale. As we celebrated our 20th anniversary in 1988, we noticed that a good number of our loyal customers from those early days of 1968 were still actively adding to their Memorabilia collections.

In late 1991 we decided to computerize our inventory. It was a remarkable task, as thousands of items had to be cataloged and properly described. That task took over one full year. The computer age made it simpler for us to service our growing customer base. In the old days, when a customer asked if we had any items on a particular ship, we had to search through many files then send out a quotation to them. This was a time consuming process as each item had to be described and manually typed. With the computer database, the same query takes a few seconds on the computer and the information is sent to our printer, and a printed quotation is available in a few minutes.

In 1995 we started on the Internet with our E-Mail address. Now our on-line customers could have quotations and even entire catalogs sent to them electronically in just a few minutes. In 1996 we added our web pages.

In 1997 we had our own domain name registered on the Internet. We are easy to find at www.oceanliner.com. In 1998 we celebrate our 30th year serving you. We also established a mirror or duplicate web site at www.newsteamship.com. We are very proud that we now serve customers in all 50 United States plus over 40 foreign countries. Indeed, a good number of our Original customers in 1968 are still among our loyal following.

As we enter the new millenium we are truly in the electronic age. We can communicate with customers in the far corners of the world almost instantly by E-Mail. Our catalogs on our web pages are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have the ability to list several thousand items on our web page catalogs. We have come a long way from our old printed catalogs of about 100-200 items. The majority of our customers use E-Mail and can be informed quickly of special offers. We still pride ourselves on the personal service we offer. We now have customers in 70 different countries around the world! It is always nice to serve our new customers, just as it is a pleasure to serve those who have been with us from the start over 30 years ago!
